Organizations Addressing Plastic Pollution
A World United – We Are Not Alone
Ocean Conservancy is working with you to protect the ocean from today’s greatest global challenges. Together, we create science-based solutions for a healthy ocean and the wildlife and communities that depend on it.
Plastic Oceans International is a nonprofit organization raising awareness about plastic pollution to inspire behavioral change. More than 300 million tons of plastic are produced annually, yet more than 90% of all plastic is not recycled. At least eight million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean each year—equal to a garbage truck per minute. Studies find plastic pollutes the air, water and entire food chain, threatening human health, wildlife and the planet. Through solutions-focused films and digital content, Plastic Oceans promotes a global movement to rethink plastic.
Plastic Pollution Coalition is a growing global alliance of more than 1,200 organizations, businesses, and thought leaders in 75 countries working toward a world free of plastic pollution and its toxic impact on humans, animals, waterways, the ocean, and the environment.
The flow of plastics into our environment has reached crisis proportions, and the evidence is most clearly on display in our oceans. It is estimated that up to 12 million metric tons of plastic enter our ocean each year. Our planet can no longer tolerate a culture of throw-away plastics. Single-use plastics are filling up our landfills, choking our rivers, and contaminating our oceans. We have been told that the individual should simply recycle away the billions of tons of plastics corporations produce and that it will make the difference needed to sustain our planet. We have been told a lie. Greenpeace
Founded in 2009, The 5 Gyres Institute has taken on 19 research expeditions in all 5 subtropical gyres as well as many of the world’s lakes and rivers in search of plastic. The 5 Gyres Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council since 2017.

Left unchecked, petrochemical giants and fast-moving consumer companies are on course to cover the planet in plastic – all for their profit. The fightback starts here. We’re uniting with a diverse, global movement that’s working to create a future free from plastic pollution, a future in which people and planet come first. To do this, we’re changing the story about who’s really responsible for plastic pollution, challenging corporate abuses, and moving towards a zero-waste system. The Story of Stuff Project
